ALL WHEEL. ALL THE TIME.
To fulfill the promise of the Volvo Cross Country, Volvo engineers
designed an advanced automated All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system
with viscous coupling and integrated it with a 4-wheel Traction
Control System (TRACS). Combined, they give you maximum
stability in the most challenging road conditions.
When the road is dry.
Power is divided between the wheels according to the changing
conditions. 1. On a straight dry road, at a steady speed, almost
all the power goes to the front wheels. 2. If you accelerate or
corner so that the rear wheels have a better grip than the front
ones, some of the power is instantly diverted to the rear wheels.
When the road is slippery.
The advantages of the Volvo Cross Country AWD system are
particularly noticeable on slippery roads. 3. The wheel pair with
the best grip always receives the most power. Getting around
on slippery roads presents no difficulty. 4. If either or both wheels
on one side have no grip, Volvo's TRACS anti-spin system
automatically applies the brakes so that power goes to the one
that does. 5. Thus, only one wheel needs to have a grip on the
road for you to get going. TRACS is active up to about 25 mph.
When driving with heavy loads.
6. If you use your Cross Country to pull a trailer or to carry
heavy loads, the rear wheels receive more of the power in order
to ensure maximum stability.
When you brake.
The rear-wheel drive is disengaged when braking, for maximum
stability. Powerful ABS brakes help make sure that the tires retain
their grip on the road even when braking hard. Electronic Brake
Distribution (EBD) distributes the braking power between the
front and rear wheels so that you always have the maximum
braking effect, even with a heavy load.
