The design of the V6 engine makes particularly
heavy demands on variable valve timing.
Viewed from above, the exhaust camshafts are
arranged on the outside and the inlet cams-
hafts on the inside.
As a result, the variable valve timers of the left
and right bank of cylinders have to operate in
opposite directions.
Variable valve timing in the V6 engine
Idling
When the engine is idling, the inlet valves are
closed late.
Torque position
The inlet valves are closed early above an engine
speed of 1000 rpm. The camshaft adjuster of the
left bank of cylinders moves down while the
right cylinder bank variable valve timer moves
up.
Performance position
At a speed of 3700 rpm, the inlet valves are
closed late.
