Moving (making transfers or changing)
warning:
If you fail to heed these warnings, it may result in falling or tilting causing serious personal injuries.
1. Moving requires a proper balance and skill and may be quite dangerous. Remember that
during moving there is a moment when the wheelchair is not supporting you.
2. To prevent falling you should:
a. learn how to position your body and how to support yourself during moving.
b. learn a method for safely moving with your therapist or competent advisor.
c. Have someone near you who can help you until you are sure you can move the
wheelchair safely yourself.
Kerbs and steps

Failure to heed these warnings may result in falling or tilting causing serious injury to you or others.
1. Never drive up or down a kerb or step unless you are an experienced wheelchair user and
can safely make a “wheelie” and you are sure you have enough physical strength in your
upper body.
2. Do not try to drive up a kerb or step (higher than 10 cm) without help. Your wheelchair may
exceed its equilibrium point and tilt backward.
3. Always drive up and down a kerb at a right angle. If you would drive at an acute angle, the
wheelchair is at an oblique angle and there is a greater risk of falling.
Moving the wheelchair and its user up or down a staircase by escorts

If possible this action should be avoided in order to prevent injury to you and/or your escort. Read
and follow the warnings to escorts. If you do not heed these warnings, it may result in falling or tilting
and serious injury to all involved.
1. Always get the help of two or more escorts when moving a wheelchair with the user in it up
or down a staircase.
2. Make sure the user is firmly seated in the wheelchair with his/her arms, legs or hands safely
out of the way of obstacles.
