Reaching and leaning affect the equilibrium point of the wheelchair. Failure to heed these warnings
may result in falling or tilting and serious personal injuries.
1.
Avoid reaching out or leaning, if this would mean changing your centre of gravity. Leaning
forward may cause the wheelchair to tilt forward. Always ensure the lower part of your back is in
contact with the back of the seat. Ask for help or use an aid to increase your range
2.
Never reach out with both your hands. If you do so, you may not be able to protect yourself
when the wheelchair tilts forward.
3.
Never lean backward to reach for something, unless your wheelchair has anti-tilt supports.
Hills and slopes
warning:
Driving up or down a slope or across a slope will change the centre of gravity of your wheelchair
Failure to heed these warnings may cause serious injuries when the wheelchair tilts over or you lose
control.
1.
Avoid turning round on a slope or driving across a slope, for the chances are your wheelchair
will tilt. If possible always go straight up or down.
2.
Always pay special attention when you negotiate a slope of more than 10% incline (1 in 10).
Ask for help if you believe the slope you want to take is beyond your capabilities. Anti-tilt
supports will not prevent you from tilting backward on a steep slope. It may happen you are
unable to reach the top of a steep incline without stopping. If you have to stop you should do
so with the wheelchair positioned crossways, as otherwise you run the risk of losing control
of your wheelchair and falling over. Usually a better option is to reverse up the slope,
because you can exercise more force. If this applies to you, you will have to try out.
3.
Always control your speed when doing downhill. If you drive too fast you may lose control of
your wheelchair. Ask for help if you are unable to drive up or down a hill. You can control
your speed by exercising pressure on the hoops. Do use either gloves or some other
protection to prevent burns by the friction of the hoops. Never use the brakes to reduce your
speed or to stop. If you do that you may lose control of the wheelchair or tilt.
