switch off the power supply of the UV-C and the pump installation. Now carefully
remove the quartz tube and clean it, using lukewarm suds. Any lime deposit should
be removed with the help of vinegar. The effective lifetime of the PL UV-C lamp is
about 7,500 burning hours. If used continuously, the UV-C lamp will consequently
last for one pond season. It is recommendable to install a new UV-C lamp each year
in spring. For your safety, the lamp switches off automatically when you loosen the
screw cap (if the plug is still in the socket). You should then unplug the unit. You
can switch the UV-C lamp back on after 3 minutes by plugging it in again. Place the
spacer round the lamp for more stability. Only after a week or two, the output of the
PL UV-C lamp will be optimum. This is a normal process for this type of lamp.
SAFETY REGULATIONS
UV-C radiation is dangerous! Avoid exposure to the eyes and skin at all times.
Exclusively inspect the functioning of the lamp through the transparent screw
cap. Exposure to harmful UV-C radiation is possible if the device is used wrongly or
damaged. If the apparatus or its flex should become damaged, stop using the UV-C
unit. Always install the splashproof unit in the special compartment of the filter at the
place of the screw cap. Please be sure that it is out of the reach of children. Place the
ballast in an area protected against the sun and rain. Exclusively use grounded sockets
with closing cover. Prevent the plug and the receptacle form getting moist. Please
provide a good quality grounded connection to the electric mains and use an earth
leakage circuit breaker rated 30 mA. If the flow of the water stagnates, for example as a
result of blockage of a defective pump, the UV-C lamp should be switched off at once.
ITEMS FOR SPECIAL ATTENTION
If water should leak from the top of the Cross-Flow Biofill, this can be caused by
pressure building up inside the filter, as a result of which the water can not flow freely.
Below you find some items which will help you finding out why the filter is leaking:
• The filter materials should have been place in accordance with the instructions for use.
• Inspect whether the filter material is blocked up or polluted. Especially if the pond
water was / is considerably green, the filter material can quickly get polluted and
it has to be rinsed then.
• The outflow orifice of the filter (50 mm) may not be reduced. The water must be
able to flow out freely.
• The maximum flow capacity of the filter is 5000 l/h. If the net output of the pump
is larger, the water will flow over the edge.
• Avoid back pressure. The water may not be elevated after the filter.
• Please take care, that the rubber ring in the groove of the cover has been applied correctly.
INSTALLATION
The filter contains four perforated partitions (2). These are to be placed so that the
first partition (by the intake opening) has the perforation on the top, the second on
the bottom, the third on the top, and so forth. With this assembly, the water stream
goes up and down. The Cross-Flow Biofill comes complete with all the necessary
filter materials. Carefully rinse the filter materials before use. Use the enclosed net
for the filter coal. Place the cover (4) in the right position on the filter, taking care
that the rubber ring is placed in the appropriate groove and close the filter with the
fastening clamps (6). It is recommendable, before closing the cover, to fill the filter
with water. The filter is only intended for filtering pond water, not warmer than 35°C.
The filter is not frost proof. Switch off the filter in the winter and store it in a dry and
frost-free place.
CONNECTING THE PUMP
The filter has a 32/40 mm hose connector for the intake opening (7). To prevent
capacity loss, the hose connector must be sawed off to the diameter of the pump
hose. A flexible reinforced pump hose is recommended. Attach the hose with a
fastening clamp. Velda recommends using a minimal 2500 and maximal 5000 litres
per hour pump capacity. The recommended pump is Green Line 5000. The outflow
opening of the filter is 50 mm (8). Use a suitable flexible hose here and secure this
with a hose clamp. To prevent leakage problems, the outflow opening should not
be made smaller. Avoid back pressure. The water may not be elevated after the filter.
MAINTENANCE
Unplug the UV-C Unit from the mains during maintenance work.
If the water output of the filter decreases considerably or if the lid is leaking, the filter
material must be rinsed out. It is generally enough to rinse it out several times with
tap water. The fastening clips have been constructed in such a way that they will
spring open when the pressure in the filter will become too high. This will occur for
example, if the filter material should contain too much dirt or if any filter material
would be used with a too small porosity for water.
It is recommended to replace the active coal once or twice a year, or at least, at the
start of the new pond season. If the water supply to the filter is stopped for four
or more hours, the filter material must first be rinsed before filtration resumes. This
prevents the micro-organisms which die from an oxygen shortage from getting in
the pond. It is recommended to use Bacterial Filterstart.
In order to maintain optimum action of the UV-C Unit, the quartz glass should be
cleaned at least three times a year. To achieve this, you should proceed as follows:
