Your Tulikivi fireplace can also be heated with pellets. When using fire-
wood, you must follow the separate firewood instructions on
page
22
.
CHECKING THE GRATE AND ASH BOX
Before ignition, clear the extra ashes and larger coals from the bottom
of the fireplace into the ash box with a soft brush or poker, for example
(
Picture P1
). If needed, empty the ash box (
Picture P2)
. Clean the
grate’s vents regularly to prevent them from getting blocked. A soft
wire brush is ideal for this. When cleaning the grate or the fire box,
set the air control lever to the ‘closed’ position (
Picture A
) with the
flue damper (if installed) open.
When the fire is burning, keep the ash
box in place and the firebox door closed.
For safety reasons, do not
handle the ash until it has cooled. Clean wood ash can be used as a
fertiliser in your garden.
ENSURING SUFFICIENT COMBUSTION AIR
About 5–10 minutes before lighting the fire, check that the flue
damper is open (
Picture P3
) and the air control lever in the ‘ ignition
and embers’ position (
Picture P4 and B
).
If you have a cooker hood
or other mechanical ventilation system, switch this off before lighting
the fire.
If the ventilation system offers the option of using a so- called
fireplace switch or forced ventilation, these options are always
recommended. Especially in modern airtight houses, it is important
to ensure an adequate supply of combustion air.
ENSURING ADEQUATE FLUE DRAUGHT
If the fireplace has not been used for some time, check that the flue
draught is adequate. Scrunch up a piece of paper into a ball, place it on
the grate, light it and close the door (
Picture P5
). If there are bright,
vertical flames, the flue draught is sufficient. If the flue is not draw-
ing sufficient air, you can prime it by using a hair dryer to blow warm
air into it via the fireplace or a clean-out.
LIGHTING THE FIRE
Make sure the pellets are at room temperature. Distribute the pellets
in the firebox as shown in the pictures (
Picture P6, P7 and P8
).
Check the amount of pellets required using the table on
page 3
of
the operating manual. Please note that the pellets must be below the
secondary air gap in the back of the firebox.
Models with square or vertical door Place 3 firestarter blocks at
the front of the firebox, spacing them equally and about 5 cm from
the front of the firebox (
Picture P6
). Models with horizontal door
place 4 firestarter blocks at the front, back and both sides of the
firebox (
Picture P7
). Press them down so that they are level with
the top layer of pellets to ensure that the fire spreads evenly. Then
light the firestarter blocks. Keep the air control lever in the ‘ignition
and embers’ position for 10–20 minutes after lighting the fire. When
the pellets are burning properly, move the air control lever to the
‘ combustion’ position (
Picture C
).
In models equipped with a by-pass damper, initial draught can be
improved by opening the damper during the ignition phase (
Picture
P9
). The by-pass damper should only be kept open for about 5–10
minutes during ignition if the draught is poor, after which it should
be closed. Leaving the by-pass damper open for longer time during
firing can raise the temperature in the flue to such an extent that
there is a danger of the flue being damaged through overheating, or
even of causing a fire.
HEATING
There is no need to adjust the amount of combustion air while the
pellets are burning. The whirlbox and grate are designed to channel
just the right amount of air to the combustion process, ensuring that
combustion is clean.
NEVER ADD pellets to a hot firebox or on top of glowing or burning
pellets (
Picture P10
).
During the final stage, when well over half of the pellets have
burned down to their embers, combustion can be accelerated by
pulling the air control lever to the ‘ignition and embers’ position
(
Picture P11 and Picture B
). This allows more combustion air to
be channelled through the grate. If some pellets remain around the
sides of the firebox, knock them to the middle of the grate using a
poker (
Picture P12
).
END OF FIRING
Be especially careful at the end of the pellet combustion process.
Allow the pellets to burn completely. Move the air control lever to the
‘closed’ position (
Picture P13 and A
) and close the flue damper (if
installed) when the pellets have burned down (
Picture P14
).
N.B. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, tasteless, colourless and
toxic gas, so take special care!
The firebox door must normally be kept closed when the fire-
place is in use. Exceptions to this are when lighting the fire and
stoking the embers at the end of combustion, as described in these
instructions. The inside and the exterior surfaces of the fireplace will
get extremely hot when the fire is burning, and will remain hot for a
long time afterwards. The fireplace surfaces are at their hottest about
2–3 hours after fire has burned out. For this reason, and to prevent
overheating, you must carefully follow the user instructions.
NEVER ADD PELLETS ON TOP OF EMBERS, AND NEVER STORE
PELLETS IN A HOT FIREPLACE. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR STORING
PELLETS. THE PELLETS MAY GASIFY AND IGNITE IN A HOT FIRE-
PLACE.
Do not overheat your fireplace. The recommended pellet amounts
for a single heating cycle must not be exceeded.
COOKING EQUIPMENT
Cooking equipment can only be used when the embers are dying
down or with residual heat. When the last load has burnt down to the
embers, make sure to always keep the flue damper open. Open the
fireplace door only when putting food inside the firebox or removing it
from there.
DO NOT leave the door open and always close it as soon as
you can! N.B. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, tasteless, colourless
and toxic gas!
In residual heat, when the embers are completely burnt
out, you can close the flue damper.
