One of the pr

ying a twin-
engine model is "what if one engine quits?"
While
“engine-out”
is ne

le

loped a model that will not
react suddenly or une
xpectedly and can be controlled

ll enough to get it saf
ely bac
k to the g
round if one
engine does quit.
There are tw
o diff
erent approaches that can be tak

if an engine quits
.
“Plan A”
is to f

SINGLE ENGINE-OUT PR
OCEDURES
The fi
rst thing to do is recogniz
e
that an engine has
quit.
This ma
y not be easy because the plane ma
y not
react immediately or the single r
unning engine ma
y
be diffi
cult to hear if other models are also in the air
.
Once y
ou’v
e
noticed that an engine has quit, the ne
xt
thing to do is decide! Decide whether to contin
ue to
fl
y on one engine until y
ou can get the plane closer
, or
to just kill the r
unning engine and mak
e a dead-stic
k
landing.
The
T
op Flite B-25 has fl

n both left and

ght-hand tur
ns on a single engine
, tur
n
ing both into
the dead and into the r
unning engine
. Both situations
will require the coordinated use of r
udder and ailerons
.
The ke
y to making turns on one engine is to steer
the plane with the rud
der and use the ailer

r keeping the wings le
vel.
Using the ailerons
to mak

ed tur

y result in a stall or a spin,
so be cer
tain to use the r
udder f

ing.
The other thing to k
eep in mind when fl
ying on one
engine is that when tur
n
ing
to

a
rd
the dead engine
(making a left-hand tur
n
with the left engine not
ru
nning) tur

y be tighter than y

xpect.
And

ing

from the dead engine (making

ight-hand tur
n
with the left engine out) tur

be wider than y
ou e
xpect.
If using the ailerons f

r
tur
n
ing a

y
from the dead engine the nose will pitch
up the plane will slo
w
until it stalls
, so again, do y
our
tur
n
ing with the r
udder and use the ailerons to k
eep
the wings le
v
e
l.
In either scenar
io the other thing to remember is to
k
eep the airspeed up
. P
o
w
e
red b
y
one engine
, there
will be enough thr
ust to e
x
tend the fl
ight, b
u
t the
plane will slo
w
ly lose altitude
. If too m
uch airspeed
is lost, one engine will not be ab
le to pro
v
ide enough

w
e
r reco
v
e
r,

to point the nose

wn to gain airspeed.
If the plane is already too

w this ma
y not be an option, so

turns
are the k

y.
When on the fi
nal leg approaching the

y, cut the r
unning engine just the same as y
ou

mal approach.
Flaps are not
recommended f
o
r a single-engine landing unless y
ou
are surely going to o

ershoot.
