10.  Charcoal is ready when 95% is red. 

Leavetheliduplongenoughtoallowallcharcoaltobe95%red,

approximately15to20minutes,itdependsonthewind.Makesuretheairintakespinnersare80%(~6
turns)openduringthisstartingprocedure.Whenfirehasreachedthe95%red,closetheairintakespinners 
downcompletelyandthenimmediatelyopenthespinnersbackup(approximately)two(2)turns,in 
normalconditionsandthree(3)turnsininclementweather).Ifthelidisclosedtoosoon,TheGood-One®
willburnlefttorightorrighttoleft.Thetemperatureinthesmokerboxshouldregisteratleast250degrees
inafewminutes—itissuggestedtomonitorthetemperaturegaugeratherthanopeningthelidswhich
allowsmuchheattoescape.TheGoodOne®teambelievesthisistheeasiest,safest,cleanestandmost
efficientwaytostartthefire.

OptionalStartingMethod-CharcoalChimney.

Somepeoplepreferstartingcharcoalinacharcoalchimney.Thefollowingarestepstopreparethefirewith 
thismethod.

WARNING. When using a charcoal chimney, follow all manufacturer’s warnings and instructions 
regarding the use of their product. Always use insulated fire gloves when handling the 
chimney.

Useone(1)chimneyonTheOpenRange™andtwo(2)chimneysonthelargermodels.

2.  

Alllids,spinnersandthedampershouldbeopenasexplainedin“Recommendedstepstopreparefire”
sectiononpreviouspage.

3. 

Placecharcoalinfirebox.

  a.Removegrillgratefromfirebox.
  b.Puta2-inchlayerofunlitcharcoalinthefirebox.

Starterblocks.Placetwo(2)firestarterblocksside-by-sideononeendofthefirebox,about6inchesfrom
theendofthesmoker.Placethefirestarters,sowhenthechimneyissetoverthem,thefirestartersare 
inthecenterofthechimneywhichisrestingontopofthe2”layerofunlitcharcoal

Whenthecharcoalchimneyis95%red,carefully,withinsulatedfiregloves,pourthecharcoalevenlyover
thelayerofcharcoal.

Finishlayeringunlitcharcoalontopofthelitcharcoalentirelyuptothelevelwherethegrillgraterests.
Ifnotutilizingthegrillforafewhoursandtoallowalongerburntime(likelyupto7-8hours),fill2"to3"
abovethelevelwherethegrillgraterestsanddonotputthegrillgrateinatthistime.
