 7.2  Trouble shooting guide

TROUBLE

SOLUTION

Leakage at the top of the bonnet around the 

stem

Stuffing nut in wrong position

Stop to operate the hydrant and change the 

complete Bonnet

Defective Stuffing nut

Stop to operate the hydrant and change the 

complete Bonnet

Defective O-rings

Change O-rings

Leakage between the bonnet and the body

Defective gasket

Change the gasket between body and bonnet

The hydrant is not closing

Upstream isolating valve is closed

Check the opening/or open the upstream 

isolating valve and try again to close the 

hydrant

Defective operating nut

Replace operating nut

Foreign body between the shut-off cone and 

seating area

Open the hydrant to make a flush out. If it is 

not working: remove the inside trim of the 

hydrant and remove the foreign body.

Curved operating stem

Replace operating stem

Large deposits and incrustations in the 

seating and guiding area

Remove the inside trim of the hydrant and 

clean the seating and guiding area

Stuffing nut in wrong position

Stop to operate the hydrant and change the 

complete Bonnet

Defective Stuffing nut

Stop to operate the hydrant and change the 

complete Bonnet

The hydrant is not opening

Upstream isolating valve is closed

Check the opening/or open the upstream 

isolating valve and try again to close the 

hydrant

Defective operating nut

Replace operating nut

Foreign body below shut-off cone

Remove the inside trim of the hydrant and 

remove the foreign body.

Curved operating stem

Replace operating stem

Large deposits and incrustations in the 

seating and guiding area

Remove the inside trim of the hydrant and 

clean the seating and guiding area

Stuffing nut in wrong position

Stop to operate the hydrant and change the 

complete Bonnet

Defective Stuffing nut

Stop to operate the hydrant and change the 

complete Bonnet

Hydrant is leaking

Shut-off cone damage

Replace shut-off cone or inside trim

Large deposits and incrustations in the 

seating area

Remove the inside trim of the hydrant and 

clean the seating area. If the seating area is 

damaged, the replacement of the complete 

hydrant must be carried out.

WARNING

Excessive torque may damage the hydrant body and result in uncontrolled water leakage of up to 16 bar. In this case, further work on 

the hydrant must be stopped immediately and a safe distance to the hydrant must be maintained, especially directly above the hydrant. 

Isolating valve installed upstream the hydrant must be closed immediately in order to stop the supply of water.
In any case, if the seating area of hydrant is damaged, replacement of the complete hydrant must be carried out.
