location and clearly labeled (see component no. 18,
figures 20 & 21).
Often there will be little or no hot water draw dur-
ing the middle of the day when the water in the
SunSiphon tank is being heated. As it is heated,
the water will expand. A potable water expansion
tank shall be connected to the piping between the
SunSiphon tank and any check valves or backflow
preventers that are in the system. This expansion
tank will accommodate expansion of the potable
water during heating. The potable water expansion
tank shall be sized, charged and installed as required
for the system pressure and volume of water at the
location.
It is good practice to determine the water pressure
in the building using a pressure gage. The expan-
sion tank’s air chamber should be pre-charged to
the same pressure as the building’s water pressure.
The expansion tank can be charged using a bicycle
type air pump and pressure gage. Normal building
water pressure is between 30 and 65 PSIG. If the
water pressure in the building is above this range, a
pressure reducing valve should be installed on the
incoming water pipe to the building.
A check valve should be installed on the cold water
feed to the SunSiphon system to reduce the risk of
accidental draining of the SunSiphon tank when
there is a loss of mains water pressure. Accidental
draining of the SunSiphon tank may result in burn-
ing out the heating element due to dry firing.
