Test/Action
3
Check the wire harness for an open circuit.
4
.
5
Test relay RY4.
UNINSTALL THE UNIT
1
Disconnect the power cord.
2
Remove the unit from the opening.
TEST FOR MICROWAVE LEAKAGE
Use a microwave survey instrument to do this test after
adjustment of the door latch switches, monitor switch, or door.
Make sure the test instrument is operating normally as specified
in its instructions.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Use a survey instrument that complies with the performance
standard for microwave ovens. Recommended instruments are:
▪
NARDA 8100
▪
NARDA 8200
▪
HOLADAY HI 1500
▪
SIMPSON 380M
1
Place the oven tray into the oven cavity.
2
Place 1 cup ± 1 tbsp of water, initially at 68°F ± 9°F, in the
center of the oven tray. The container should be a glass or
plastic 2.5-cup beaker with inside diameter of ~3
1
/
2
". This
standard load protects the oven and allows accurate
measurement of any leakage.
3
Close the door, and turn the oven on with the timer set for
several minutes. If the water begins to boil before the end of
the survey, replace it with 1 cup of cool water.
4
Move the probe slowly (not faster than 1"/sec) along the
gap.
5
Measure the microwave radiation emission 2" or more from
the external surface of the oven.
TEST THE MAGNETRON
1
To isolate the magnetron from the high-voltage circuit,
remove all wire connectors connected to the filament
terminal.
2
To test for an open circuit filament, use an ohmmeter to do
a continuity test between the magnetron filament terminals.
The meter should show a reading of less than 1 Ω.
3
To test for a filament-to-anode short circuit, connect the
ohmmeter between one of the terminals and the case of the
magnetron (ground). The test should show infinite
resistance. If the test shows a low or zero resistance,
replace the magnetron.
TEST THE TRANSFORMER
WARNING
High voltages and currents are present at the
secondary winding and filament winding of the
transformer. It is very dangerous to work near this
part when the oven is on. Never take any voltage
measurements of the high-voltage circuits, including
the magnetron filament.
1
Disconnect the wire connectors at the transformer's primary
winding.
2
Disconnect the filament and secondary winding
connections from the rest of the high-voltage circuitry.
3
Use an ohmmeter to check the resistance of the windings:
Primary
~ 0.4 Ω
Secondary
~ 123 Ω
Filament
< 1 Ω
4
If the readings are very different from the values in the table
(indicating either an open or a short), the transformer is
probably faulty and requires replacement.
TEST THE HIGH-VOLTAGE RECTIFIER ASSEMBLY
1
Isolate the high-voltage rectifier assembly from the HV
circuit.
