REPLACING SHAFT SEAL
REPLACING OLD SEAL
1. Follow steps 1 through 7 under Cleaning/Replacing Impeller
(above) for pump disassembly.
2. Remove rotating half of seal by placing two screwdrivers under
seal plate and carefully prying up (Figure 11). Seal plate will slide
off shaft, bringing seal with it.
FIGURE 11
NOTICE: Be sure you do not scratch or mar shaft; if shaft is
marred, it must be dressed smooth with fine emery or crocus
cloth before installing new seal.
3. Place seal plate face down on flat surface and tap out stationary
half of seal. NOTICE: Be sure you tap on ceramic seat, not on
copper insert. Do not disturb copper insert.
INSTALLING NEW SEAL
1. Clean seal cavity in copper insert. Do not disturb copper
insert. (If insert is moved or dislodged, see instructions for
Installing Copper Insert.)
2. Wet outer edge of “O” Ring on ceramic seat with liquid soap. Be
sparing!
3. With thumb pressure, press ceramic seal half firmly and squarely
into seal cavity in copper insert (Figure 12). Polished face of
ceramic seat faces inside of pump. If seal will not seat correctly,
remove it and reclean cavity, placing seal face up on bench.
Seal should now seat correctly.
FIGURE 12
4. If seal does not seat correctly after recleaning cavity, place a
cardboard washer over polished seal face and carefully press
into place using a piece of standard 3/4” pipe as a press.
NOTICE: Be sure you do not scratch seal face.
5. Dispose of cardboard washer and recheck seal face to be sure it
is free of dirt, foreign particles, scratches and grease.
6. Inspect shaft to be sure it is free of nicks and scratches.
7. Reinstall seal plate on motor flange, making sure that it is right
side up (index pins down; top of plate is marked).
8. Apply liquid detergent sparingly to inside diameter of rotating
seal member.
9. Slide rotating seal member (carbon face first) onto shaft until rub-
ber drive ring hits shaft shoulder.
NOTICE: BE SURE not to nick or scratch carbon face of seal
when passing it over threaded shaft end or shaft shoulder.
10. Hold motor shaft with 7/16” open end wrench on shaft flat and
screw impeller onto shaft. This will automatically locate seal in
correct position.
11. Reinstall diffuser on seal plate with two screws.
12. Follow steps 7 through 12 under Cleaning Shallow Well Jet
(above) for pump reassembly.
INSTALLING STAINLESS STEEL INSERT
NOTE: If the stainless steel insert moves or shifts during seal
removal, it should be removed and reinstalled.
1. Remove stainless steel insert as shown in Figure 13. Do not
deform.
FIGURE 13
2. Replace stainless steel insert:
A. Clean off all surplus Permatex* from around insert cavity. Be
careful not to scratch or mark the machined bore. It is important
that this area be clean so no old Permatex lodges behind the
new insert and causes improper seating.
B. Place small amount of No. 2 non-hardening Permatex on surface
of insert as shown. Smooth out with finger. See Figure 14.
FIGURE 14
C. Pull insert into cavity as shown in Figure 15.
