This function will determine the polarity (ring and tip)
on a telephone line.
WARNING:
Keep fingers away from the metal test lead tips when
making connections.
5. To further verify, short the wires on the suspected pair.
If the shorted pair is connected to the tone generator, the tone will
be much weaker.
6. If a pulse tone is selected on the tone generator, momentarily
shorting the correct pair will cause the tone to change from an
alternating high low pitch to a fast paced pulsating sound.
The tone will alternate between these two sounds every time the
pair is shorted.
7. If there is no change in tone when the pair is shorted, try other pairs
until the right one has been identified.
8. When tracing phone wiring terminated to a standard telephone jack,
the tone generator’s RJ11 connector can be used in place of the
test leads. Note that the connection is on pins 3 and 4 on a
6-position wall jack.
1. Set the
TONE/CONT
switch to the
TONE
position.
2. Connect the red test lead to one wire and connect the black test
lead to the other wire on the line being tested.
3. If the line is connected to voltage, the Continuity/Polarity LED
will glow. The LED will be green if the red test lead is connected
to Ring (negative) and the black test lead is connected to
Tip (positive).
4. The LED will be red if the test leads are connected in reversed order.
5. When testing a standard phone jack, the tester’s RJ11 connector
can be used in place of the test leads. Plug the RJ11 connector
into the jack. Note that the connection is on pins 3 and 4 on a
6 position wall jack. Green indicates correct polarity.
Red indicates reversed polarity.
