NON-CONTACT AC VOLTAGE DETECTOR MODE
NON-CONTACT AC VOLTAGE DETECTOR MODE
13
•Read, understand and follow safety rules and operating Instructions in the
manual before using the non-contact voltage detector feature of this voltage
tester.
•The voltage tester’s safety features may not protect the user if not used in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
•Check the NCV detector on a known live source within the rated AC voltage
range of the detector before use to ensure it is in working order.
•Insulation type and thickness, electrical outlet design, distance from the
voltage source, shielded wires, and other factors may affect reliable
operation. Use other methods to verify live voltage if there is any uncertainty.
•Do not use if the detector appears damaged or if it is not operating
properly.
•Do not use on voltages that are outside of the 100-1000V range.
•Use caution with voltages above 30 volts AC as a shock hazard may exist.
•Comply with local and national safety requirements – particularly with
regard to arc-flash potential.
•Do not use the detector if there is evidence that batteries have leaked.
Detector may be compromised.
•Use approved personal protective equipment when working on live circuits.
•The detector will not detect voltage if;
o The wire is shielded or in a grounded metal box or conduit
o The operator is not grounded or is isolated from an effective earth ground
o The voltage is DC
•The detector may not detect voltage if:
o The detector tip cannot be fully inserted into the electrical outlet
o The outlet is a Tamper Resistant (TR) design
o The user is not holding the voltage tester
o The user’s hand is insulated from the voltage tester with a glove
o The wire is partially buried or in a grounded metal conduit
o The magnetic field being created by the voltage source is being blocked
or interfered with
o The frequency of the voltage being detected is not a perfect sine wave
and distorted
o The tester is outside of the operating specifications (see Specifications
section below)
o The LED(s) may not be visible in direct sunlight or bright light conditions
The detector may detect at different voltage thresholds under different
conditions or may not detect voltage at all unless the following conditions
o The user is holding the body of the voltage tester with a bare hand
o The user is standing on or connected to earth ground
o The air humidity is nominal (50% relative humidity – non-condensing)
o The voltage tester is held stationary
Operation: Non-Contact (AC) Voltage (NCV) Detector
MODE
1. Press and hold the POWER button to turn the voltage tester on. The
POWER LED will illuminate red. The voltage tester will automatically enter
the VOLTAGE test mode. The blue VOLTAGE LED will be illuminated.
2. Briefly press the MODE button to switch to the NCV mode. The blue
VOLTAGE LED will turn OFF and the blue NCV LED will turn ON. The NCV
detector tip will illuminate green and flash periodically. You may also hear
the voltage tester make some faint clicking sounds. This is normal.
3. Hold the NCV detector tip close to the AC voltage source.
