2-2. Periodic Inspections
2-2-1. Purpose of Periodic Inspections
The purpose of the periodic inspections described in this
section is to prevent malfunctions and breakdowns in the
PCM-3348HR’s mechanical and drive systems resulting
from wear and material fatigue. Malfunctions and break-
downs of this kind tend to occur in proportion to the
frequency and accumulated time of use.
In digital audio recorders like the PCM-3348HR that are
protected by error correction systems, minute defects in
system components do not become readily apparent. As a
result, defection of such defects is often delayed (see figure
below). The periodic inspections recommended in this
section are designed to prevent serious malfunctions from
occurring, by discovering and repairing potential defects
before they occur.
The purpose of this periodical check and maintenance is
satisfying the electrical and mechanical specifications
mentioned in the operating instructions of PCM-3348HR.

It is also recommended, for long-term trouble-free opera-
tion that the unit be periodic inspections.
The periodic inspection items are showm in Table 1.
Read the tape running time (head hours) of the PCM-
3348HR to check when implement periodic inspection.
To determine the tape running time, press the “RECALL
A” button while pressing down the “SET” button on the
control panel. The number of hours (
OOO
H) will be
displayed in the TAPE TIME display section.
The schedule of implementing the periodic inspection
differ depending upon the operating environment and
operating ambient conditions of each machine. Consult
your Sony dealer.
