UNIVERSAL ASYNCHRONOUS

RECEIVER AND TRANSMITTER (UART)

12.1 OVERVIEW

The UART offers a flexible means of full-duplex data exchange with external equipment requiring an industry standard
NRZ asynchronous serial data format. The serial interface is applied to low speed data transfer and communicate with
low speed peripheral devices.

The UART offers a very wide range of baud rates using a fractional baud rate generator.

12.2 FEATURES

Full-duplex, 2-wire asynchronous data transfer.



Single-wire half-duplex communication



16-byte receive and transmit FIFOs



Register locations conform to 16550 industry standard.



Receiver FIFO trigger points at 1, 4, 8, and 14 bytes.



Built-in baud rate generator.



Software or hardware flow control.
