LEVEL WINDING
The level wind needs to be operated in conjunc-
tion with the pulling speed control to guide the
pulling line onto the reel as evenly as possible,
avoiding a build-up at any point on the reel.
As the pulling reel fills or slows, rotate the sys-
tem pressure knob to increase one full turn.
The level winds are hydraulically powered
and manually operated. The speed is con-
trolled by the speed control valve mounted
on the control panel. Rotating the valve coun-
terclockwise increases the speed of the level
wind while clockwise rotation decreases the
speed. Maximum clockwise rotation shuts off
the level wind completely. There is a separate
speed control valve for each level wind. Only
the level wind for the reel in use should be
on; all others should be shut off completely.
The direction of travel for the level wind is
controlled by a single directional valve locat-
ed on the lower portion of the control panel.
The level winds follow the control lever; for
example, when the handle is moved to the
left, the level wind moves to the left. The level
wind will continue to travel as long as the
lever is held in the on position. It will stop
when the lever is returned to the neutral (ver-
tical) position. For best results, the level wind
should be operated in a jogging manner.
If more than one level wind is used at the
same time, it will be necessary to adjust the
speed controls so that they travel at the same
speed. Before starting the pull, all level winds
to be used should be positioned so that they
have the same relative position to their reels.
By using the individual speed controls the
speed of a particular level wind can be tem-
porarily increased or decreased to make nec-
essary adjustments as the rope fills the reel.
