BABT
BABT
(British Approvals Board Telecommunications) A body
which checks and approves telephony devices (such as
phones) for connection to the public phone networks.
Baud rate
Baud rate
The speed at which information can be sent along a
telephone line. Due to the various compression and
coding techniques used for sending digit data to an
analogue telephone line, the baud rate is higher than the
telephone lines 'bits per second' rating.
Handsfree
Handsfree
Using the telephone without picking up the handset.
Also called on-hook operation.
Hayes
Hayes
Hayes are a modem manufacturer whose series of
commands from a PC to a modem have become an
industry standard. Hayes commands are supported by a
wide range of modems and software packages.
Hayes AT
Hayes AT
A Hayes ATtention command from a PC to a modem.
The AT is followed by the command which consist of
letter and number codes. Several commands may be
combined in a string following the AT.
LD
LD
(Loop Disconnect) A method of dialling digits along a
telephone line. It is characterised by a series of clicks
for each digit dialled. Also frequently called Pulse
dialling.
MF
MF
(Multi-frequency) A method of dialling digits to a
telephone line that uses tone sounds. It is characterised
by a different tone for each digit dialled. Also called
DTMF (Dual-tone multi-frequency) and Tone dialling.
TAPI
TAPI
(Telephony Applications Program Interface) A standard
jointly developed by Microsoft and Intel for integrating
telephony devices (phones, faxes, etc.) with a PC.
TBR
TBR
(Time break recall) A method used to signal to the
exchange. SPOT uses TBR automatically.
