8 Measures for Ensuring Safe Operating
Periods
The health and safety requirements set forth by the EU directives legally stipulate that specific risks
that can occur, for example due to fatigue and aging, be eliminated.
In accordance with this, the operator of series lifting devices is obligated to determine the actual
usage. As part of the annual inspection by customer services, the actual usage time is calculated and
documented. A general overhaul must be performed once the theoretical usage period is reached or
at the latest after 10 years. All inspections and the general overhaul must be arranged by the operator
of the lifting device. The following theoretical usage periods (converted into full load hours) apply for
chain hoists that are classified according to ISO 4301-1:

8.1 Determining the Actual Usage Period
The periodic readings or calculated values are documented in the inspection book.
The actual usage period depends on the daily operating time and the load collective.
The running time is calculated based on data from the operator or is recorded by an operating hours
counter. The load collective is determined as shown in Table 1: Load collective. These two values
produce the annual usage period from Table 10.
