12 Repairs
If the operation of the butter fl y valve is no longer compliant or if
it does not work at all, it is defective and must be repaired or re-
placed.
Damage to the butter fl y valve due to improper maintenance
and repair!
Ö
Do not perform maintenance and repair work on your own.
Ö
Contact the After Sales Service at PFEIFFER for maintenance
and repair work.
In special cases, certain maintenance and repair work may be
performed.
The work described in this chapter may only be performed by
specialist personnel quali
fi ed to perform the corresponding task.
The following instructions apply additionally for butter fl y valves.
For decommissioning and disassembly, observe Chapter “10 De-
commissioning” and “11 Disassembly”.
12.1 Replacing the packing
If a leak is found in the stuf fi ng box (6), the PTFE rings of the
V-ring packing (9) or the rings of the meshwork packing (9)
could be defective.
Ö
Check the condition of the packing.
Disassemble the butter fl y valve to remove the packing. For this
purpose, observe Chapter “1 Safety instructions and safety
measures”.
12.1.1 Replacing the V-ring packing with but-
ter fl y valve BR | 14b (type | WTD and
MTD)
Ö
Place the butter fl y valve on an even and clean work surface
so that the packing space is easy to reach.
Ö
Loosen the screws (20) and remove the stuf fi ng box (6) care-
fully.
Ö
Remove the spring washers from the set of spring washers
(10).
Ö
Remove the thrust piece (15).
Ö
Remove the V-ring packing (9).
Ö
Check the PTFE rings of the V-ring packing as well as all
plastic and graphite parts for damage and, in the case of
doubt, replace them.
Ö
Assemble the butter fl y valve as described in Chapter “3.5.1
Assembly of butter fl y valve BR 14b with spring washer
preloaded V-ring packing (type WTD and MTD).

12.1.2 Replacing the meshwork packing with
butter fl y valve BR | 14b (type | WNS)
Ö
Place the butter fl y valve on an even and clean work surface
so that the packing space is easy to reach.
Ö
Loosen the screws (20) and remove the compression spacer
(6) carefully.
Ö
Remove the meshwork packing (9).
Ö
Check the rings of the meshwork packing as well as all plas-
tic and graphite parts for damage and, in the case of doubt,
replace them.
Ö
Assemble the butter fl y valve as described in Chapter “3.5.2
Assembly of butter fl y valve BR 14b with adjustable stuf fi ng
box (type WNS).
12.1.3 Replacing the V-ring packing with but-
ter fl y valve BR | 14c (BR | 74b) (type | WTD
and MTD)
Ö
Place the butter fl y valve on an even and clean work surface
so that the packing space is easy to reach.
Ö
Loosen the screws (20) and remove the stuf fi ng box (6) care-
fully.
Ö
Remove the spring washers from the set of spring washers
(10).
Ö
Remove the thrust piece (15).
Ö
Remove the V-ring packing (9).
Ö
Check the PTFE rings of the V-ring packing as well as all
plastic and graphite parts for damage and, in the case of
doubt, replace them.
Ö
Assemble the butter fl y valve as described in Chapter “3.5.3
Assembly of butter fl y valves BR 14c (BR 74b) with spring
washer preloaded V-ring packing (type WTD and MTD).
12.2 Replacing the seal ring
If a leak is found in the passage of the butter fl y valve, the seal
ring (4) could be defective.
Ö
Check the condition of the seal ring.
Disassemble the butter fl y valve to remove the seal ring. For this
purpose, observe Chapter “1 Safety instructions and safety
measures”.
12.2.1 Replacing the seal ring in butter fl y
valves up to DN | 300 (NPS12)

Place the butter fl y valve on an even and clean work surface
so that the seal ring is easy to reach.
