ZONES OF USE OF ATEX PUMPS
USE IN POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
• The information in this chapter is a complement to the information
provided in the pump manual. This chapter refers only to the special
cautions and procedures that shall be followed when working in a
potentially explosive atmosphere. Read always both manuals before
starting to use the pump.
• Always respect the working conditions for the pump mentioned in its
instructions manual.
• Pump installation, piping, commissioning, maintenance and repair
must be done by qualified personnel.
• Be sure that the pump is used following its marking and in approved zones.
• Be sure that the pump is well primed before start pumping flammable
or explosive fluids.
• Do not close the suction line and do not adjust pump speed or
operation acting on it.
• Check regularly for pump leaks.
• To avoid risks from static electricity, always use conductive elements
for the connection of the pump. The use of non-conductive elements
external to the UP pumps (UP03/UP05/UP10/UP15) is the
responsibility of the end user.
• Additional equipment to the pump must be certified separately.
• Never use the pump with non conductive fluids in atmospheres with
IIC gas.
• When using the pump equipped with non-conductive diaphragms
that exceed the maximum allowable surface area, as defined in UNE-
EN ISO 80079-36 section 6.7.5 Table 8, the following protection
methods must be applied:
- The equipment is always used to transfer electrically conductive
fluids, or
- The explosive environment is prevented from entering the pump
internals, i.e. dry running is avoided.
• Always connect a ground wire, which must be attached to the pump.
It must respect the surface temperature considerations in explosive
atmospheres. UP pumps (UP03/UP05/UP10/UP15) comply with the
UNE-EN ISO 80079-36 standard for their safety, marking the limit
temperature for the groups of gases and vapors for which this pump
is intended. The maximum surface temperature that the equipment
will reach in normal operation or with foreseeable failures will always
be lower than 85ºC and 100ºC respectively, and will depend directly
on the temperature of the pumped fluid. The above indications must
be respected at all times and under no circumstances should the
process temperature limits indicated in this manual be exceeded.
• For use in explosive atmospheres formed by dust, bear in mind that
the maximum surface temperature that the equipment will reach in
normal operation or with foreseeable failures will always be lower
than 85ºC and 100ºC respectively, and will depend directly on the
temperature of the pumped fluid. Under no circumstances should the
process temperature limits indicated in this manual be exceeded.
• In the presence of explosive atmospheres, maintain the pump away
from such atmospheres. Under no circumstances should the
equipment be dismantled or opened (opening the pump and
disassembling its various components) in the presence of
explosive atmospheres.
• Clean the pump regularly and remove all dust accumulation on its
surface when working in a potential explosive atmosphere.
• Be sure all elements are well connected before running the pump.
Always use flexible connecting elements and install pump on silent
blocks to avoid vibrations.
• Be sure valves at the pump inlet and outlet are open before running
the pump.
• Avoid the pump to run dry. Install a detection system like a low level
detector in the fluid storage tank.
• Maintain and inspect the pump regularly. Make sure the pump is
serviced according to the service instructions by a qualified repair
station. Use only original SAMOA parts for servicing. Use of non
original parts will make the ATEX approval invalid.
• Make sure that pump is placed in a safe location, with no risk of parts
or materials falling on it.
• When the pump is not operating normally it should be maintained
properly. It is the responsibility of the end user to respect the
conditions of use of the pump.
• The construction of the UP pumps (UP03/UP05/UP10/UP15) ensures
that the parts necessary to achieve the safety level cannot be
unintentionally dismantled. Always check tightening torques and
strictly follow the maintenance instructions in the instruction manual.
WARNING: FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS MENTIONED IN THIS CHAPTER TO AVOID RISKS OF SERIOUS INJURIES OR
DEATH AND DAMAGE OF THE EQUIPMENT AND ITS ENVIRONMENT.

Areas defined as G (gas):
Valid for zones 1 and 2.
•
Zone 1:
Location where an explosive gas, vapour or mist atmosphere is
likely to occur in normal operation (excluding gas which may be present
in mines, firedamp).
•
Zone 2:
Location where an explosive gas, vapour or mist atmosphere
is likely to occur in normal operation (excluding gas which may be
present in mines, firedamp).
Areas defined as D (dust):
Valid for zones 21 and 22.
•
Zone 21:
Location where a combustible dust cloud atmosphere is
likely to occur in the air in normal operation.
•
Zone 22:
Location where a combustible dust cloud atmosphere is
not likely to occur in the air in normal operation and if it does occur
it is likely to occur only infrequently and for short periods of time.
