15.1.2 REPLACEMENT OF AN OIL-RETAINING RING
Figure 15 shows a view of the crankshaft assembly. Proceed as follows to replace an oil-
retaining ring in the gearbox:
1.
Remove nuts 2 and 3 on the same crank element 6 which is the closest to the gearbox
(and is positioned the same way as the crank element 10 on the gearbox), which may be
very tight if fastened with Loctite. Heat may help.
2. Remove the right-hand crank element 6 by pushing the shaft away from the gearbox.
Mark the position of the crank element before removal.
3. Remove Big-End 1.
4. Remove nut 9 and crank element 10 after marking their positions.
5. Remove the oil-retaining ring 11 with a screwdriver.
6. Clean the area / remove all oil and grease.
7. Install the new oil-retaining ring.
8. Clean the crank element 10 and seal the splines with a silicone sealant.
9. Mount the crank element in the correct position.
10. Fill the area between the “handle” and the shaft with silicone sealant.
11. Install a new locking plate and nut 9. Use Loctite for installing the nut.
12. Tighten nut 9 with the torque indicated in figure 16.
13. Install the remaining parts in reverse order.
14. If the crankshaft does not run smoothly, see 15.2.3.
15.1.3 Releasing crankshaft tension
If parts of the crankshaft have been replaced, the crankshaft may be more difficult to turn.
Pre-tension can be the cause. It is necessary to eliminate the sources of tension as follows,
see fig. 16:
1. Use a hammer to tap against the centre of the crank, starting with the crank located next
to the gearbox. Do this alternately left and right from the crank.
2. Feel whether the crank moves in the bearing and continue until the throw settles into
place.
3. Repeat this procedure for each adjacent crank until all of the throws have settled into
position and the crankshaft turns more easily.
@ After repairing the crankshaft, the nuts must be checked regularly for looseness.
@ Do not mount the cranks on the wrong side of the machine. See the parts page for the
correct part numbers.
