6. Turn transaxle bypass valves to operating
position. See
Move Unit Manually
on
page 15.
7. Start engine.
8. Slowly move steering joystick forward and
backward 5 or 6 times.
9. Stop engine, lower unit to ground and check
oil level. Add oil if needed.
10. Repeat steps 1 – 10 until transaxles operate
smoothly in forward and reverse at normal
speed without excessive noise.
TRACK TENSION
WARNING:
Avoid Injury
Read and understand the
Safety
section before proceeding.
Check Track Tension.
The rubber tracks may occasionally need a tension
adjustment, especially during the break-in period.
Track tension may be checked as follows:
1. Place the unit on a hard, level surface.
2. With the engine off, disengage the parking
brake.
3. Place a straight-edge on top of the track,
roughly down the center, running from the
sprocket to the front idler
4. Apply 150 to 200 pounds of weight to the
top of the track, roughly half way between
the drive sprocket and the front idler wheel.
(a person standing on the track would
suffice).
5. Measure the gap between the straight
edge and the lowest point of the track. The
gap should range between 3/4" (.75") to
1-3/4" (1.75") of sag.
6. Adjust the track tension if necessary
Adjust Track Tension
1. Loosen the 4 bolts just behind the front idler
so that the front idler carriage can slide
2. Loosen the lock nut on the track tension bolt
3. Adjust the track tension bolt in or out as
required to achieve the proper track tension.
When loosening the track, it may help for a
person to stand or lightly bounce on the top
of the track to help the parts adjust properly.
4. Once the proper track tension is achieved,
tighten the track tension bolt locknut
5. Tighten the four bolts just behind the front
idler.
CHECK MOWER BLADES
Check blades for wear. Replace or sharpen as
needed.
WARNING:
Avoid Injury
Use sturdy gloves or padding to protect
hands when working with mower blades.
Rotation of one blade rotates the other
blades
Remove Blades
1. Place unit in service position. See
Service
Position
on page 17.
2. Disconnect spark plug wires
3. Remove hardware retaining blades and
lower spindle guards to spindle and remove
parts. (See Figure 18.) Retain all parts for
reinstallation.
4. Clean all grass, dirt and debris from upper
and lower spindle guards.

SHARPEN BLADES
CAUTION:
DO NOT sharpen blades
while attached to unit.
1. Remove blades. Discard blades if:
•
More than 1.3 cm (1/2") of metal is
removed.
•
Air lifts are eroded.
•
Blades are bent or broken.
