For extended periods of nonuse or long-term storage, typically 90
days or more, placing the motor into a Layup condition is highly
recommended. This process adds the needed layer of oil residue
onto all the interior parts preventing corrosion and removes
residue from the breakdown of fuel that clogs fuel system
components. Upon completion of the Layup Procedures the
motor should be stored inside the dive locker/boat shop, garage,
or storage container. Prior to the layup procedure, conduct a
complete set of motor Pre Operations checks. Use Salt-Away®
flushing kit to prevent corrosion and decrease metal deterioration
by eliminating build-up of rust in water passageways.
Layup Procedure
Run treated fuel (STA-BIL®
360 Marine Ethanol Treatment &
Stabilizer) through the motor.
Run the motor at fast idle to
circulate treated fuel throughout
the filter and the carburetor(s).
Once the motor has reached operating temperature, With the
engine idling, shut off its fuel supply so its running on just the treated
fuel in the carburetor float bowl(s).
On the Salt-Away Mixing Unit turn the mixing selector to the Salt-
Away" position.
Just as the engine starts to die, rpm will climb. At this precise
moment, begin furiously squirting fogging oil (STA-BIL® Fogging Oil)
down the carburetor throat. Flood the engine with a mist of fogging oil
until it stops running.
Turn the Mixing Unit to the “Off” Position and disconnect
Next remove all of the spark plugs and liberally spray fogging oil
into each cylinder.
With the spark plugs back in place and the lock plate lanyard
removed, crank the motor for a few seconds to distribute oil onto the
piston rings and cylinder walls.
Apply dielectric grease to each plug boot and attach to respective
spark plug.
