CONSTRUCTION NOTES (continued)
CABLES
Untwist ALL cables BEFORE making a final attachment. A twisted cable is more prone to jamming
or twisting a wire thimble during field assembly of the aircraft. However, there are exceptions
which permit cable twisting before final attachment to 'fine tune' the exact length necessary for
proper attachment.
DO NOT
cut the Part Number identifiers off of the cables.
BOLTS
All bolts used in the airframe of the Quicksilver aircraft are either 'Graded' aircraft quality, military
specification or conform to S.A.E. standards (Society of Automotive Engineers). The most
commonly used bolts in this aircraft are fine threaded 'AN' (Air Force-Navy) bolts. The coarse
thread bolts used in the construction of this aircraft are referred to as 'Grade 5' bolts and are used
in specific locations. Their positions are shown in the text.
'AN' quality bolts are used throughout the construction of this aircraft for structural integrity. To
verify proper sizes, use the
"AN' BOLT GAUGE' on page 1-4 FOR REFFERANCE
OR obtain a
true 'AN' bolt gauge. Before securing any bolt verify the grip length is correct.
After using washers as illustrated, AT LEAST ONE BOLT THREAD SHOULD EXTEND PAST THE
LOCKNUT (THREE THREADS ARE PREFERRED). One or more washers may be added to prevent the
bolt from 'bottoming out' before producing a snug fit. Generally, a washer is installed to prevent
the nut from turning and digging into the aluminum or steel part since it is much easier to replace
a washer than a scored or damaged part. If needed add a washer under the head to take up
length.
IMPORTANT:
Particular care is necessary during bolt tightening. Bolts which pass through Tubes
without solid internal support should NEVER be overtorqued. When a nut, bolt head,
or washer is in contact with a tube, notice that very little wrench torque will begin to distort the
tube walls. If any distortion is observed, it is TOO TIGHT. Back off the nut to allow the tube to
regain its shape. BE PARTICULARLY CAREFUL when installing ALL Grade 5 Bolts, Fork bolts and
Eyebolts in the Wing and Aileron Spars. DO NOT OVER TORQUE AND DISTORT THE TUBE OR SPAR
Typically the Grade 5 Bolts will require 20 INCH POUNDS of Torque. All flying wires should be
securely fastened to their respective Spar. It should be difficult to move the wire tang under the
head of the bolt. On a bolt / nut assembly, it should be difficult to move the bolt. Wrench on the
head of the bolt.
NUTS
ALL Jam Nuts, Locking Nuts and Bolts should be clean and dry before installation. Threads should
NEVER be oiled. ALL (non locking) Jam Nuts and Locknuts should be properly torqued (EXCEPT
CASTLE NUTS). Bolts with damaged threads or rough ends should not be used. When tightening
castle Nuts onto Bolts, the cotter pin or safety holes may not line up with the slot in the castle nuts
when the proper torque is reached. Back off to the FIRST available slot. A castle nut may NEVER be
over tightened to permit lining up the next slot with the hole.
LOCKNUTS
The bolt threads should extend preferably THREE but at LEAST ONE FULL THREAD past the end of
the locknut after tightening.
