Raising The Bar
The DLTtape system can continue to improve in performance and
capacity well into the future. A DLTtape cartridge has over 10,000
square inches of recording area, several times the recording area
offered by helical scan technologies. There are two reasons for this.
First, the DLTtape system uses half-inch tape, which is wider than
the tape used by helical scan technologies. Second, helical scan tape
cassettes contain two reels, so they are only half full of usable tape.
As a result, DLTtape technology has far greater potential for contin-
ued capacity improvement.
Super DLTtape Technology
Early in 1998, Quantum announced the next-generation Super
DLTtape technology. Initial shipments of Super DLTtape technolo-
gy products started in 2000 (see Figure 17-1), with volume produc-
