How to apply SPK buttons on the sails
Spread out the dry sail on a dry surface.
Clean both sides of the sails where the buttons will be applied, with acetone or alcohol,
and let it dry.
Starting with the head, mark the points where the buttons will be applied to the the sail
luff using removable adhesive tape.
The quantity and position is free, at your discretion, based on the size of the sail,
however we recommend to position the first button as close as possible to the head and
the tack.
Just as an example, for a gennaker of a 40’/50’ boat, we recommend eight buttons for the
head at a distance of about 1.2m (4’)
One of the parameters to be taken into consideration when determining the distance
between the buttons is the wind range of the sail: if it is a strong wind sail the buttons
will be closer while if it is a sail for lighter wind the buttons will be more sparse.
For the tack, the number of buttons is a related to the length of the bowsprit/pole and
the position of the sail bag when hoisted.
We recommend a button every meter (3.3’).
For example, if the distance from the tip of the bowsprit to the position of the sail bag or
from the hatch is four meters, at least four buttons are recommended.
