Climate Control Systems Diagnosis & Repair

911 Carrera (993) Model System

Interior Temperature Sensor

The interior temperature sensor sends a signal to the
Heating-A/C Control Unit for interior temperature.
Interior temperature is sensed and compared with the
target temperature requested by the passengers. In
automatic climate control systems, interior and ambient
temperatures are compared. This comparison influences
outlet temperatures and blower speed. The control unit will
command a higher blower speed if there is a large differ-
ence between the two temperatures. The interior tempera-
ture sensor is built into the Heating-A/C Control Unit.

Left and Right Mixing Chamber Temperature
Sensors

The mixing chamber temperature sensors sends an analog
signal to the Heating-A/C Control Unit for the temperature
of the blended air sent to the air outlets. The Heating-A/C
Control Unit can change the temperature of this air by
controlling air flaps to add more or less heated air.

There are two mixing chamber temperature sensors in the
air distribution housing, one near the left blower and one
near the right blower.

Air Control Flap Position Sensors

The air control flap motors in 911 Carrera (993) models
have feedback position sensors built-in. The position
sensor is a potentiometer which provides an analog signal
to the Heating-A/C Control Unit for flap position.

There are five air control flap motor position sensors in air
distribution housings:

• Temperature mixing flap position sensors - L&R
• Fresh air/flap position sensor
• Defrost flap position sensor
• Footwell flap position sensor

Actuators

Compressor Clutch

An electromagnetic clutch engages and drives the
compressor. The clutch hub and spring plate are attached
to the compressor shaft and turn with it. The clutch pulley
is driven by the serpentine accessory belt. When the elec-
tromagnetic clutch coil is energized, the spring plate and
hub are strongly attracted to the pulley by a strong
magnetic field and they both rotate together.

The Heating-A/C Control Unit controls compressor clutch
engagement. The clutch can be removed and replaced
separately.

Condenser Fan

The condenser fan promotes airflow through the
condenser to improve heat transfer from the refrigerant to
ambient air. The condenser fan will run at second (high)
speed when refrigerant pressure exceeds 17.5 bar (254
psi). This is controlled by the 3-way pressure switch.

Air Control Flap Motors

Air control flaps in the air distribution housing are moved
by air control flap motors. These electric motors are
moved on commands from the Heating-A/C Control Unit.

There are five air control flap motors in 993 air distribution
housings:

• Temperature mixing flap motors - L&R
• Fresh air/recirculation flap motor
• Defrost flap motor
• Footwell flap motor

Left and Right Blowers

Two blowers are in the air distribution housing. The
blowers promote airflow into the mixing chambers to allow
heated and cooled air to blend to the desired outlet
temperature. Blower speed is controlled by the knob
setting on the Heating-A/C Control Unit.

The blowers are located on the left and right sides of the
air distribution housing. Each blower has a replaceable
particle filter.
