Regulating Air Temperature
The air distribution housing is located in the front, in the
cowl area of the vehicle. The housing includes the evapo-
rator, left and right blowers, inlets for fresh (outside) air
and heated air, and air control flaps.
The air distribution housing brings in fresh (outside) air or
recirculated air. With A/C ON, cooled air and heated air
are blended to obtain the desired interior temperature.
Left and right blowers distribute this air to air outlets. Two
blowers are used because the horizontally opposed engine
places the exhaust heat exchangers on both sides of the
vehicle.
Fresh air is drawn in through the engine air inlet grille by
the engine cooling fan. Some of this air is pumped to the
exhaust heat exchangers by the auxiliary heater blower.
The auxiliary blower supplies hot air forward through left
and right hot air ducts and ensures that the supply of
heated air is not totally dependent on the engine cooling
fan and engine speed. This makes temperature regulation
more consistent regardless of engine and vehicle speed.
The air is heated by the exhaust heat exchangers. This hot
air then flows through left and right hot air ducts in the
body sills which supply it to two blowers in the air distribu-
tion housing. A muffler is installed in each hot air duct to
reduce noise.
Particle Filters
Two particle filters are installed in the left and right blower
housings in the cowl. All air passes through these filters
and they should be replaced every 15,000 miles.
