3-4.3b Disengaging Pump, Ford Engine With Ford 6R140 Transmission
Pump Disengagement - Ford Engine
1. Reduce engine speed to IDLE.
Adjust Hand Throttle or Pressure Governor to bring engine to IDLE.
2. Close discharge valves.
Close all discharge and inlet valves SLOWLY to prevent water hammer.
3. Shift transmission to NEUTRAL (N).
If the display flashes “N”, then the transmission has FAILED to shift because the engine speed is too high. If
this occurs:
d. Make sure engine speed is at IDLE.
e. Shift back to DRIVE.

Shift back to NEUTRAL.
4. WAIT 3-5 seconds after shifting to NEUTRAL (N) for pump drive shaft to stop spinning.
5. Check tachometer.
Make sure engine has remained at IDLE. If the engine speed has increased, the pump panel throttle control
may not have been properly reset to IDLE.
Exit the cab and reset hand throttle or pressure governor to IDLE.
6. Check speedometer.
Speedometer should read 0 MPH. If the speedometer reads ANY speed e.g. 1-10 MPH or more), then repeat
the entire procedure.
7. Shift pump lever UP to ROAD position.
8. Apply the service brake by pressing and holding the brake pedal.
9. Check pump indicator lights.
If one or both lights are on, the pump was not successfully shifted from PUMP to ROAD. If this happens, repeat
the entire procedure.
If there is a loud grinding noise when attempting to move the truck, the shift to ROAD has not completed. Shift to NEUTRAL,
wait for the grinding noise to stop, and shift back to DRIVE.
10. Shift transmission to DRIVE.
11. Release parking brake.
12. Move the truck forward to confirm the shift to ROAD has completed.
