Pump Engagement - Cummins or Detroit Engines (continued)
Keep pump water cool. Do not operate the pump for extended periods with the discharge valves closed or the pump may
overheat. The pump is fitted with a thermal relief valve to help prevent overheating.
Engage pump only at engine idle speed.
Supply water to pump immediately after engaging pump. Running pump dry for more than a few minutes will cause damage.
Air pressure gauges should indicate 80 PSI or greater. Pump may not shift out of road position if the air pressure is below 80 PSI.
5. Engage the pump shift control lever.
Flip pump shift control lever DOWN to engage pump. Wait up to 4 seconds for pump engagement.
6. Check “Pump Engaged” indicator light.
Indicator light turns ON when the pump shift control is moved from ROAD to PUMP,
and
when the pump shift
actuator has moved.
• If light OFF, pump is NOT engaged. Check:
• Air pressure 80psi (551 kPa) or above
• Parking Brake Applied
• Wheels Chocked
Pump may not engage if gear teeth fail to mesh. In this case:
Shift to N → Shift to R → Shift to N → Shift to D
Transmission should shift into pump. Repeat steps as necessary to complete the shift into pump mode.
7. Shift transmission to DRIVE (D).
After PUMP ENGAGED light is ON. A driveline driven pump must have the transmission shifted into DRIVE
for pumping.
8. Check the speedometer.
NOTE: GHG17 Detroit Diesel engine-equipped apparatus will not indicate a speedometer reading.
If the speedometer indicates some value of road speed (approx. 12-18 MPH) AND the vehicle is not moving,
the pump is successfully engaged.
Begin pumping immediately after engaging pump.
Recirculate water if hoses are not ready to keep water cool.
Running pump dry for more than a few minutes will cause pump damage.
9. Check the “OK to Pump” indicator light. The “OK to Pump” light turns on when:
• Pump shift Control has successfully engaged the pump, AND
• Transmission has been successfully shifted into DRIVE, AND
• Transmission torque converter is in the locked mode.
