Care and storage
As long as you take care of your Fire Skillet correctly, it will last for generations. Thus, you must follow
a few important basic rules.
• Let the Fire Skillet cool down completely before cleaning it thoroughly with hot water. Never use
dishwashing liquid or soap to clean the Fire Skillet. It can damage or even destroy the patina.
• Use a commercially available dishwashing brush or a sponge to clean the Fire Skillet.
• Always dry the Fire Skillet thoroughly after cleaning, and apply a thin layer of Petromax Care Con-
ditioner for Cast and Wrought Iron before stowing the Fire Skillet. You can also use a neutral oil or
vegetable fat. Do not use olive oil, for it cannot be heated to a high temperature.
• The Fire Skillet is not dishwasher safe.
• Never stow the Fire Skillet when wet or untreated.
Re-seasoning
The patina (protective layer of the Fire Skillet) must be renewed when it is affected. It can happen,
for instance, that your Fire Skillet starts to rust at places, due to incorrect storage. In that case, please
proceed as follows.
• Remove the rust with a wire brush or a metal sponge. Then clean the Fire Skillet with hot water,
dishwashing liquid and a dishwashing brush or a sponge. Dry thoroughly.
• Coat the Fire Skillet (inner and outer surfaces) with neutral oil, vegetable fat or the Petromax Care
Conditoner for Cast and Wrought Iron. Do not use olive oil as it cannot be heated as high as other
kinds of grease.
• Then place the Fire Skillet in a preheated oven at a temperature of approx. 180 °C. Let bake for 1 to
2 hours and then switch off the oven. Open the oven door slightly and let the Fire Skillet cool down.
• Caution!
Burning the layer of grease can cause smoke. We, therefore, recommend doing the seaso-
ning outside, for instance on an open fire or in a kettle grill.
• Grease the Fire Skillet again once it has cooled down. Your Fire Skillet is now seasoned.
