There will now still be air in the hose between the IAM and the ICM-2000:
This can be removed in three ways:
•
Open the ICM-2000’s needle valve slowly until a drop of lye comes out of the needle.
This will happen more quickly if the IAM is placed slightly higher than ICM-2000. Close
the needle valve if all the air has been removed from the hose. Remove the drop of lye
before starting the measurement.
•
Pierce a bottle or can that does not need to be measured but can be used for testing.
Shake to equilibrium and allow gas to escape from the can or bottle as small bubbles by
opening the needle valve. Close the needle valve and wait until the lye has absorbed
the CO
2
in the hose, i.e., until the hose between the ICM-2000 and the IAM is
completely filled with lye. Shaking the hose will speed this up.
•
Remove the rubber cone from the ICM-2000. Connect a hose containing CO
2
(0.5 bar
maximum) to the ICM-2000’s needle. The hose may be warmed for ease of assembly.
Open the needle valve slowly and expel the air from the hose using the CO
2
. Close the
needle valve, remove the hose and assemble the pushbutton with the rubber cone.
A non-return valve may be placed in the hose between the ICM-2000 and the IAM.
The IAM is now filled with lye, without air, and is ready to be used for measurements.
7.2
Uses of the IAM
The IAM has three possible uses, which are all based on the method given below.
7.2.1 General IAM method
1. Slowly open the needle valve (pos. 8) and allow small bubbles of the head gas to bubble
through the lye in the IAM.
If the liquid does not foam up after opening the needle valve, the rear of the bottle must
be tapped using a hammer (the foaming action forces the head gas out of the bottle).
2. Close the needle valve when gas no longer escapes from the bottle
/can
or
as soon as liquid from the bottle/can enters the IAM’s hose,
3. Slide the leveller barrel (pos. 103) so that the liquid in the
leveller
barrel
and the
measuring burette
(pos. 111) are at the same level
(the hydrostatic pressure on the gas pocket will be neutralized and
the correct volume will be indicated).
4. Open the sealing tap (pos. 112) and allow a small amount of lye to
flow along the edge of the measuring chamber (this is now filled with
air).
5. Adjust the liquid level in the
leveller barrel
and the
measuring
burette
again so that they are the same.
6. Read the level on the IAM (the bottom of the meniscus) in ml.
7. Slide the leveller barrel upwards (maximum position) and open the
sealing tap so that the air can escape from the measuring burette.
8. Close the sealing tap.
