Color Wheel Operation
Concept
Figure 10 - Color Wheel Concept
The color wheel is positioned between the lamp
and the DMD device to give the picture color.
Refer to Figure 10. Light from the lamp passes
through the color wheel. The color wheel
consists of Red, Green, Blue and Black panes
mounted on a 3 phase motor shaft (not shown).
As the wheel rotates, the white light passing
into the panes is filtered into the corresponding
color. Only one color leaves the color wheel at
a time and is applied to the video driven DMD
device. The video is synchronized to the
spinning color wheel.
The color wheel begins spinning at power on. If
the color wheel stops, the TV shuts down and
the Power LED blinks nine times (red), pauses
and repeats.
Color Wheel Replacement
Replacement: Three screws hold in the color wheel assembly from the top of the light
box assembly. Refer to figure 11. Unplug the input connector (L3) and output
connector (L2) and wiggle the color wheel assembly out (upward).
Defective color wheel symptoms: TV shutdown, wrong colors on portions of the screen,
and picture solarization (sluggish motor rotation).
