b) Selection and preparation of the electrode
The electrodes are usually made of tungsten (2% addition of Torit and gray colored). The
diameter is selected in consideration to the welding current (see table).
One end of the electrode is sharpened (an angle arises). The angle changes in consideration
to the welding current.
c) Additional material:
There are various additional materials. Please notice the following basic rules:
1. The composition and the mechanical properties of the welding wire must be conform to the
base material.
2. You shouldn’t use dirty or impure materials, which can adversely affect the weld quality.
3. When the additional material has different chemical composition as the base material, the
final composition of the seam connection has to be evaluated in terms of mechanical and
anticorrosion properties.
d) Shielding gas:
As a shielding gas pure argon is used. The TIG welding is suitable for welding of steel and
provides a very beautiful seam, which does not require additional processing. Prior to the
welding process, a detailed and clean preparation of the edges is required.
