Spirit knee brace is modifiable to provide an good fit to
the leg anatomy while providing corrective forces. Modifications to
extension stops, shell alignment, varus or valgus force, strap length, pad
size, and shell contour should only be made by the health care
professional.
Adjusting hinge contour and corrective forces (Picture 1):
1. Before putting the brace on the leg, loosen the two tamper-proof
hinge adjustment screws using the supplied Allen wrench.
2. Seat the patient on the edge of a chair, leg in full extension
3. Loosen the tibia strap
4. Place brace on leg with center of hinge in line with center of patella.
The hinge should be placed midline in the anterior / posterior plane
5. Secure midstrap. Use spacer pads to quantify hinge angulation
(each pad = 3 degrees).
(Picture 2).
6. Insert spacer pads between the patient’s leg and the condyle pad of
the hinge
7. Align shells and hinge with leg anatomy
8. With slight pressure against the hinge, tighten the bottom hinge
adjustment screw followed by the top adjustment screw
9. Remove the brace, tighten the adjustment screws
10. To ensure adjustment is secure, apply varus or valgus strain to the
mechanism. If the mechanism clicks, go to step 1
Shell adjustment:
1. Remove liners from the brace
2. Use heat gun to warm specific area of shell
3. Apply pressure to adjust the shell shape
Strap length adjustment (Picture 3):
1. Determine strap length to be removed
2. Remove strap from brace
3. Locate Velcro loop end and remove Velcro hook piece
4. Cut along sewn cut lines. Each line is 1 inch (2.5 cm)
5. Re-apply strap
