Finishing
5.5.1 Screw the tow hook in the position shown on the plan.
5.5.2 Painting and decorating
In order not too add weight to your model any decoration and painting should be kept to a minimal. The paints
that you can use are felt tip pens ( permanent ) or acrylic
The wings and tail assembly should have the least decoration otherwise the centre of gravity will change.
5.5.3 Trimming your model
Place the finished model on the worktop facing you and then let it go. The way that it is falls, then that wing is
the heaviest . Place small nails in the opposite wing tip as weights until the model balances
The centre of gravity is 43mm from the nose directly under the dowel part 16 . Place the model on your forefin-
ger at this point. When correct, the nose should tip lightly down at the front. Should it be front heavy add weight
to the tail end ( Plasticine or small nails) Should it be tail heavy drill a little hole in the nose block and add lead
shot
Trim the model until it balance correctly
.
Your first flight
Only try your model when there is a light wind or no wind at all
Place the wings on the cradle and fasten them in place with rubber bands
The model should be launched into the wind (Throw a few tufts of grass into the air to test which way any wind is
blowing)
Once the model glides in a smooth path you can try towing it up high
So if in the test flight the model flies upward and then dives forward it is either tail heavy , or you have not launched
it with the nose facing slightly downward
Try again if is no better add more weight to the nose
If the model dives straight away it was either launched too hard or is nose heavy – here more weight must be
added to the tail
If the model flies in a curved path if it should be a very wide one. Should the curve be too severe the tail fin must
be gently bent in the opposite direction –careful as it will break easily!).
Tow Line:
For a towline you should look in the Opitec catalogue
The tow line start is similar to launching a kite
You will need two people, one to hold the model and one to run
Start by laying out the line along the ground to the height you wish to achieve
The helper holds the model with the nose pointing upward ( 45-60 degrees)
The runner give a signal when he wants run and the helper runs a little with him until the line is tight . As soon as
the line is tight the helper lets the model go- the runner continues running until the model is overhead and the tow
hook releases itself.
Note:
The helper must not throw the model into the air!
If the model careers to one side the towing procedure should be stopped
The normal cause of this is that the model has not been launched into the wind or held straight at the start.
If the model flies high in tight circles adjust the rudder to make larger circles if you wish.
Note:
If the wind is a little strong or the weather is warm and there is chance of thermal activity do not let out
so much line, otherwise it may fly really high and you can lose your model
.
Don’t forget to glue the label with your name and address on to your model !!!!
We wish you fun and enjoyment flying your “ Stiletto “ glider!
