Chapter 5: Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

Problem Solution

Device is not
found when
connected to
HOBOware Pro

Check USB cable connections.
Check the computer’s COM port/USB settings.

I launched the
HOBO U30
Station in
HOBOware Pro,
but my settings
have been
changed

Launches attempted with HOBOware Pro will be
overridden by the Launch Configuration set up in
HOBOlink.com the next time a connection made. If the
HOBO U30 Station is communicating with
HOBOlink.com, then it most likely has been relaunched
with the settings saved in HOBOlink.com. We
recommend only using HOBOlink.com to launch the
HOBO U30 Station.

I set the Launch
Configuration,
but it is not
logging

If it is the first launch, make sure you have entered a
Readout Configuration.
If it is not the first launch and the HOBO U30 Station is
connecting but still not launching, then select “Force
Relaunch on Next Connection” and wait for the next
connection.

Problem Solution

The HOBO U30
Station is logging
and the battery
level is ok, but
connections to
HOBOlink.com
are unsuccessful

The HOBO U30 Station may be deployed in a location
where the cellular signal isn’t strong enough to make a
connection to HOBOlink. If there is no double-blink on
the blue network status light, then there is no connection
to HOBOlink, and likely no cellular coverage.
Check your mobile network carrier’s signal strength maps
on their website to identify a general deployment
location. Then, bring a laptop to that location along with
the HOBO U30 Station. Connect the station to the laptop
with the USB cable. Open HOBOware Pro, access the
Status window, and check the signal strength, which is
measured on a scale of 0 to 10 (0 being no signal, 10
being strong). If the strength is marginal, move the
HOBO U30 Station to a better location (e.g. higher, away
from obstructions, etc.).
If the signal is strong, something else is causing the
problem. A connection may not be made when:

ƒ

There is heavy traffic in the wireless carrier’s network.

ƒ

  There is heavy internet traffic.

ƒ

The HOBOlink server is down due to scheduled

maintenance, or under rare circumstances, a crash.

ƒ

The temperature exceeds the operating range for the

HOBO U30 Station (see the specifications table on
page 57).

ƒ

The radio and/or antenna in the logger is damaged.

The power was
reset and I need
a full readout
before
relaunching

In Launch Configuration in HOBOlink.com, select Full
Readout upon Power Reset. This feature may not be
available with all data service levels.

I can’t tell if the
relay is working
properly

Use the USB cable to connect the HOBO U30 Station to
a computer. Open HOBOware Pro and select Control
Relay from the Device menu. You can Activate and
Deactivate the relay for testing purposes.

I need to connect
to HOBOlink
now; I don’t want
to wait for the
next scheduled
connection to
HOBOlink

Connect the HOBO U30 Station to the computer using
the USB cable. From the Status window, select Contact
HOBOlink. This will initiate an immediate connection to
HOBOlink.com regardless of the next scheduled
connection time.
