4. Troubleshooting
This chapter contains hardware-related troubleshooting hints for the CrossFire
8720 Switch. The CrossFire 8720 Switch offers diagnostic information for
troubleshooting via external LEDs and its management interfaces, including
console interface and a built-in web-browser interface.
4.1 Basic Troubleshooting
Most problems are caused by the situations listed below:
•
Mechanical damage during transportation. Visually inspect the unit, especially
when shipping containers are damaged. In such a case, proceed as stated in
Unpacking and Inspecting on page 11.
•
Faulty or loose cables. Look for loose or obviously faulty connections and
make sure the connectors are clean. If the problem persists, try a different
cable.
•
Incorrect switch-to-switch or switch-to-end-nodes connections. You have to
use a correct cable type for a given type of connection. If you have connected
your switch to another switch or a hub using twisted-pair cable (from an RJ-45
connector), you should use a cross-over cable. The connection will not work If
you have used a straight-through cable in this case (the Lnk port LED will not
come on). For connections from the switch to LAN adapters in end nodes, you
should use a straight-through cable, otherwise the connection will not work,
either. See appendix A, Cable and PIN Information for pinouts and correct
cable wiring for crossover and straight-through twisted-pair cables.
•
Non-standard cables. Make sure you are not using any non-standard cables
since it can seriously impair your network performance. In case of any doubt,
compare your cable to the corresponding cable shown in appendix A, Cable
and PIN Information. A category 5 cable tester is a recommended tool for
every 100 Base-TX network installation.
•
Invalid Network Topologies. The most common topology faults include
topology loops (for example, due to disabled Spanning Tree), excessive cable
length and excessive repeater delays between end nodes. If the network
problems arose after recent changes to the network, you should change back to
the previous topology. If you no longer experience the problems, this new
topology is probably faulty.
