4G3: DC Battery Chargers
To the right of the helm is a meter for the ship’s battery charger, which
functions only if this unit is turned on by operating the “Battery Charger”
breaker in the AC power panel. This meter tells you how much energy in
amperes the charger is providing to the batteries: The greater the charging
rate, the more
the batteries were discharged (you can check their voltages with the
voltmeter described below).
You will rarely use the battery charger because the primary house
battery charger is the Inverter, and the engine and/or generator
starting batteries will not normally need charging; you should
leave the battery charger AC breaker “OFF” unless a starting
battery is dead!
4G4: DC Battery Switches
Just inside the under-stair door to the engine room from the
forward companionway are the battery main switches. These are
used only in an emergency; their location allows them to be
accessed in event of an E/R fire.
Generator, Port, Starboard
: These switch on/off the
associated starting batteries.
Parallel On
: Turn this switch on only if an engine starting battery is low.
