Chapter 9 Connecting the cables to the BCM50 system

To install an auxiliary ringer

Use the installation instructions that came with the ringer hardware to install the auxiliary
ringer.

Connect the ringer generator to the auxiliary ringer output pair on the RJ-21 telephony
connector. Refer to the

“RJ-21 telephony connector wiring chart” on page 205

to determine

which pair of wires is used for the auxiliary ringer.

Select the appropriate option for your system:

•

If you are adding more auxiliary equipment, proceed to

“Connecting an external paging

system”

“Connecting an external music source” on page 109

•

If you are finished adding auxiliary equipment, proceed to

“Next step” on page 112

Connecting an external paging system

You can connect a customer-supplied external paging system to provide paging over external
loudspeakers.

Ensure the paging system follows these guidelines:

•

The paging output from the main unit is 100 mV rms across an input impedance of 600

•

The output level is 0 dBm0 with reference to 600 ohms, for a PCM encoded signal at 0 dBm.
There is no dc voltage across the page output terminals.

When you use the page signal output to connect an external paging amplifier, you also use the
page relay output which contains a floating relay contact pair. The system uses this output to
control the external paging amplifier.

•

The contact pair for the page relay output has a switch capacity of 50 mA (non-inductive) at
40 V (maximum).

To install an external paging system

Use the installation instructions that came with the external paging hardware to install the
external paging system.

Connect the paging system audio input to the page output on the RJ-21 telephony connector.
Refer to the

“RJ-21 telephony connector wiring chart” on page 205

to determine which pair of

wires is used for the page output.

Connect the paging system relay to the page relay output on the RJ-21 telephony connector.
Refer to the

“RJ-21 telephony connector wiring chart” on page 205

to determine which pair of

wires is used for the page relay output.

Warning:

The auxiliary ringer must not be connected to unprotected plant wiring.

The ringer must not draw more than 50 mA from a 40 V dc source.
