Doc#: 499-020 REV1 NEB extender
Selecting the right cable
We recommend that you use a good quality Cat5/Cat5e cable, of the type SF/UTP with a minimum core
size of 24 AWG (Lower number is better, so use 20-24 AWG).
o
AWG: American wire gauge indicates the size of the conductor.
o
UTP: Unshielded Twisted Pair indicates that each pair is unshielded.
o
SF: Indicates that the cable has both a Braid and Foil screen. The braid is easier to fit in to the
plug used for the NEB Extender, than using a cable with only foil (F/UTP).
Is there an alternative to CAT cable?
If you do not like working with CAT cable there are other options.
You can use other twisted pair cables with similar qualities as Cat5. However, avoid FTP cable, where
single pairs are shielded, as this will increase the capacitance of the cable.
