AP Management System (APMS)

AP Management System (APMS)  explains how to setup the Access Point (AP) for
use in networks requiring more management control.  It also describes the various
ways in which the System Administrator can connect to the AP in order to manage
it.

The Access Point Management System (APMS) is a Windows 95/98/NT, SNMP-
based management tool for users to configure and monitor APs through an
Ethernet, wireless, or PPP connection.  The APMS management tool is intended
for performing full-blown wireless network configuration and management.

When Do I Need the APMS Program?

Users need the APMS program when they need to:

Install multiple APs in the network and segment them in different domains

Monitor wireless traffic

Analyze network performance or detect problems

Check the number of wireless Stations that are served by a particular AP

What Does the APMS Program do?

The InstantWave APMS management tool enables users to:

Give an AP an Alias name

Change an AP’s IP address or set a subnet mask and community string

Set a default gateway should a router exist in the network

Set protocol filters to filter out unwanted traffic from the wired to wireless side

Set wireless specific parameters

Domain name:  Name to define a wireless Cell/Subnet

Aging timer:  Time span for an inactive wireless Station s address to be kept in

Data Rate: Auto select 1 or 2 Mbps, Fixed 1 Mbps, Fixed 2 Mbps, Fixed 5.5
Mbps, Fixed 11Mbps or Full Auto

WEP: The WEP stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy

Set the management access permission to configure or monitor the APs
through the

Access Control

menu item.  This protection prevents unauthorized

access to the AP’s configuration parameters

Monitor and diagnose network problems

View the number of wireless Stations that are connected to a particular AP

View the wireless traffic statistics of an AP

Save or load a specific AP’s configuration parameters to/from a file

Set a password for the APMS program
