Metal Detector Code of Ethics:
It is important to practice metal-detecting in a way that does
not harm the environment or damage historical sites. Here
are some guidelines to follow.
Obey the law. Observe all
federal, state, and local laws
that apply to any areas you
might want to search. Contact
your state’s Archaeologist’s
Office or the Department of
Historical Resources and
Preservation before you begin.
For national parks and other
federal land, contact the
Advisory Council on Historic
Preservation.
Be respectful of other
people’s rights and property.
Obtain permission to search
on private property before
you begin.
Leave the site as you found it.
Avoid trampling vegetation and always fill in your holes after
digging.
Be responsible with the treasures you find. Return lost items
to their owners if you can, and resist the urge to sell artifacts
to private collectors.
Help further the cause of archaeology. If you find items
of historical significance, stop digging and call your local
historical or archaeological society before disrupting
the site.
