WARNING: Do not use
the heat pack for
perlonged periods as you
can cause skin damage.
Combination Heat/
Ice therapy
In some instances you may wish
to use a combination of ice and
heat to gain the beneficial
effects of both treatments. This
often of most benefit to soft
tissue injuries (muscle strain,
bruising etc.)
Apply the heat pack to the area
for up to 10 minutes, then apply
the cold compress pack for 10
minutes, this process may be
repeated for 2-3 cycles. It
advisable to apply the cold
compress pack last so as to
reduce the risk of any increased
swelling. If the cold compress
pack/heat pack causes an
increase in your symptoms, stop
using it until you have seen your
health care provider. You should
also see a health care provider if
pain persists for longer than 72
hours after an injury.
Simple rules to follow
for cold and hot pack
•
If there is swelling and pain use
ice.
•
If there is no swelling, but
stiffness is present use heat.
•
If this is an acute injury (within
the first 6 weeks) use ice.
•
When in doubt.... use ice.
When there is an injury or
discomfort, a good, rule to
follow for first aid is RICE:
R
- Rest the injury
I
- Ice the injury
C
- Compress the injury
E
- Elevate the injury above your
heart
