Appendix D. External modulators and injection current modulation

former. Primary and secondary were wound with 10 turns of PVC-
insulated hookup wire around a ferrite bead approximately 15 mm
diameter. A 500 Ω potentiometer allows control of the modulation
amplitude, and a 9 V battery and 100 kΩ potentiometer provide a

frequency offset control of the modulated light beam.

board. Very narrow linewidths can be achieved with suitably high
bandwidth frequency discrimination, for example by phase locking
two lasers. The diagram below shows an arrangement to lock two
lasers to an EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) reso-
nance, which obtained a beatnote linewidth below 1 kHz [10].
