Removing Lint Buildup From the Combustion Air Train on
6458xxxx and 7272xxxx Gas Dryers and Conditioners
This document replaces BIPDDM01 "Cleaning the Burner Screen on Dryers and Conditioners."
The applicable models use an Eclipse brand burner that needs to consume 1200 CFM of air, or
more, for proper combustion.
As lint builds up in this area, dryer performance drops and it
becomes difficult for the burner to remain lit. Flameout's, low pressure faults, and other
problems often result; and mis-diagnosis inevitably leads to harmful attempts at corrective
action. Good performance can often be maintained merely by observing this simple cleaning
procedure.
The three areas to be checked and cleaned are explained below.
1.
Air Intake Screen or Filter
The current design uses the metal screen shown in
Figure 1
. Various earlier designs had either a
large flat filter, two small flat filters, or the large canister filter shown in
Figure 2
. If your dryer
uses a metal screen, clean it in place with a nylon brush. If your machine uses any type of soft
filter, remove it and clean with compressed air or a vacuum, or replace with a new filter. As
stated in preventive maintenance, perform this cleaning as frequently as indicated by visual
inspection or when the
Combustion Air Low
(
!
) status light illuminates.

2.
Burner Diffuser Plate
Referring to
Figure 3
, dryers in current production are provided with an air wand (P/N W7
71558) and a burner box access hole (item 3). The wand may also be fabricated locally, as
described in the figure. If your dryer does not have an access hole in the burner, install one using
the dimensions shown in the figure (one side only). Clean the burner diffuser plate at six month
intervals or sooner, if cleaning the screen or filter does not resolve the symptoms of insufficient
combustion air. Perform the following cleaning procedure either with the dryer shut down or,
observing appropriate safety precautions, with the machine in operation .
CAUTION 1 : Strike hazard
—The air wand can whip out of your hand when connected to
compressed air.
• Hold firmly.
1. Carefully connect the air wand to plant air (see
caution statement
1
).
2. Insert the wand into the access hole in the burner housing (item 3) with the holes in the wand
pointing toward the diffuser plate.
