Keys Doors
Tailgate
Only drive with the tailgate closed as
otherwise exhaust fum es may enter
the vehicle interior.
The rear license plate can be seen
correctly only when the tailgate is
closed.
To close the tailgate, take hold of
grabstrip and press down.
The rear com partm ent lamp will be
sw itched off by the co n ta ct switch
only if the tailgate is fully closed.
Note:
Lock tailgate with m aster key prior to
washing the vehicle in an autom atic
car wash. The washing brush could
otherwise cause it to open.
Central Lock System
The central lock system will lock or
unlock the vehicle doors, tailgate and
the tank filler flap whenever the
d rive r’s d o o r is locked or unlocked.
As the d rive r’s door button is moved
the b uttons of all o ther doors must
move at the same time. If this is not
the case, the lock of the co rre sp o n d ­
ing d o o r has not engaged fully. Open
the d o o r once more and close it
correctly.
W ith the central lock system engaged
the safety buttons of the fro n t
passenger door, the rear doors and
the tailgate can also be actuated
manually. The fro n t passenger door
and the tailgate can in addition be
locked and unlocked w ith the master
key.
The central lock system can only be
applied by depressing the button of
the drive r’s door. Lock b u ttons of the
o th e r doors cannot be depressed
individually.
The tailgate can also be locked, and
unlocked with the m aster key, inde­
pendently of the central lock system.
However, every time the driver’s door
lock is operated, the tailgate lock will
operate correspondingly.
The central lock system operates on
vacuum generated by the engine. A
reservoir allows the central lock
system to be actuated about five
tim es after the engine is turned off. If
the system can then no longer be
engaged, idle engine fo r a short
period.
If no vacuum is available, doors and
tailgate have to be locked individually
using a key o r depressing the button.
The fuel tank filler flap, however,
remains unlocked.

If the fille r flap cannot be opened
when the central lock system is
unlocked, refer to “ Unlocking of the
Filler Flap” (page 78).
