Glossary
Partition
A logical area of a hard drive which the operating system treats as a separate
hard drive. Each partition is assigned a unique drive letter. Partitions which
are connected as fixed drives are also known as “volumes”.

Port (hardware)
A special output on a device to connect with other devices by means of a ca-
ble or connector. Examples include Ethernet ports, power connections and
USB ports.
Protocol
A convention for data transmission which determines the run-time perfor-
mance, control format and data markers.
Share
An area, similar to a folder or directory, which has been set up to organise
files and access them from the network. Shares can be “public”, i.e. available
to everyone on the network, or “private”, i.e. only accessible to selected users
on your network.

Streaming
Media, such as audio, video and photos, which can be continuously received
at the same time as being delivered by a streaming supplier.
