Spinomed
®
Intended purpose
Spinomed is a back brace. The product is
exclusively to be used for the orthotic
fitting of the spine and only on unbroken
skin.
Putting on the back brace
When putting on the back brace, you
will find it helpful to stand in front of a
long mirror.
Putting on the Spinomed is rather like
putting on a rucksack:
1. First undo the large hook and loop
fastener (A).
2. Now put on the orthosis as you would
a rucksack. The pad on the back brace
should be next to your back (Figure 1).
3. Slip your hands through the hand loop
(B) and do up the two halves of the
fastener so that the elastic part of the
fastener is stretched (Figure 2).
Now check in the mirror
•
the fit of the back brace; the padding of
this should now be fitting comfortably
against your spine. The lower edge of
the brace should be level with the
coccyx (Figure 3).
•
the straps; these should not be twisted
or turned over, except at the strap
guide buckles (Figure 4).
•
the fit of the shoulder pads; the strap
should not cut in under the arm.
•
the strap guide buckles; these should
not push to one side.
Caution:
To prevent the back brace from slipping
out of position, the lower belt should be
tighter than the shoulder straps.
Although upward slipping of the brace
will not affect the function of the device,
you should pull the back brace down
again.
Mode of action
By activating the muscles of the back,
the back brace straightens the upper
body and reduces the curvature due to
osteoporosis. The Spinomed can
therefore stimulate the body’s own
muscle resources. The simplicity of
adjustment of the back brace allows the
device to be fitted correctly for each
individual patient. The strap
arrangement, similar to that of a
rucksack, brings the shoulders back
without limiting the range of movement
in the shoulders and arms and without
restricting breathing movements in the
chest or abdominal areas. Optimum fit
results in pain reduction and increased
mobility for the wearer.
Use
During the initial phase, to allow gradual
restoration of muscle activity, the back
brace should be worn for only 1–2 hours
a day. As treatment continues, wearing
times may be increased gradually. The
orthosis should not be worn while
sitting for a long time or lying. The shape
of the brace may be readjusted if
necessary by your orthopaedic
technician.
Your compliance and co-operation are
important in the use of this appliance.
Therefore, if you have any problems,
please contact your doctor or
orthopaedic technician. Any changes to
your Spinomed which may be required
can then be undertaken. It is essential to
the success of this treatment that you
follow your doctor’s instructions.
Do not wear the Spinomed next to your
skin, but wear a T-shirt or vest under the
brace.
